The nurse was very unprofessional, and putting a patient's life at risk after Mal already disclosed she is allergic to Latex. That question is always asked on most forms I fill out or I'm asked at my primary care physician's office if am allergic to latex. I would have likely made a complaint with her supervisor.

Certainly not brushing it off and acting like it is the patients responsiblity.

Poor Mal, I know this was filmed a while ago and she’s feeling better now but I want to hug her in this Vlog, also not to be that person Stephen but you should have said something to the doctor or to someone at the front desk about the latex incident; it’s not okay that something like that happens and if someone else comes in with the same allergy as Mal then the ENT/the building need to be ready for it.
In any case, I’m really glad Mal is okay now, lots of hugs for you both.

That allergy situation reminds me of middle school.. I am allergic to mites, and yet was forced to go to Woodwork class.
I don't know if it's common in other countries, but in Sweden we have tailoring and woodwork crafting classes, where you choose one of the two each semester. And even though I was literally gasping for air the whole time (not fatally allergic thank goodness) I was forced to be there, since we had a majority of girls in class who always picked tailoring, leaving no seats for anyone else, because I was to slow to sign the list.
It got better when my woodwork teacher allowed me to go outside and rest for 10 mins, but I am still baffled they never prioritised an allergy over a damn list :/

I had a similar experience to Mal but with a doctor instead of a nurse. I had a very very severe headache that went on for weeks so my mom convinced me to go to the ER for it. So they review my allergies the triage nurse does and then when the doctor finally comes into the room he asked what was wrong and then he said ok ill give you this cocktail of medication, I asked what medications because not everyone looks at the allergy list. He's like just compazine and Benadryl for nausea, I'm VERY allergic to Benadryl I can not take it orally let alone as a IV drug, it causes my heart to race past 200bpm and it will stay this way for hours and I feel like I can't breath. The doctor literally laughed at me and said "nobody is allergic to Benadryl that's impossible" and my mom stepped in and said she didn't care for him not to give it.
Then the nurse comes in and again we ask what is the medication im getting she says compazine and the medical name for Benadryl neither me or my mom knew the medical name for Benadryl so we thought he switched it to something else. HE DID NOT. Almost immediately after the nurse injected the medication I was like I don't feel well my face went cold and the room spun and of course my heart was at a dangerous level, needless to say they had to keep me till the medication wore completely off after giving me something to off set it. nobody even apologised that they could have literally killed me. People need to be SO careful about allergies. even if it seems harmless to you it can be a death sentence to another person and im so sorry that Mal had to deal with someones incompetence like that, it could have been disastrous.

@@Madmushroom64 Your first comment really sounded anti-surgery. Yes, I understand now that you didn't mean it that way, but that's how it came across. Yes, the body isn't meant to be cut into, given how it reacts, but the way you worded it had an undertone of "surgery is bad".

TheGirlInFandomWorld Not really. It’s more like “Surgery isn’t natural.” Which it isn’t. There was no insinuation of it being either good or bad. She said at the first sign of a cramp take 1 to 2 tablespoons of yellow mustard! Just scoop mustard on a spoon, take a deep breath and swallow. (I like mustard but this is a bit much). What you are ingesting is Tumeric. I tried it in capsule form but it didn't work. It takes 20 - 30 min to digest then no more cramp. I'm quite a skeptic usually but I'm glad I tried this. @@MissNintendique I guess I'm in the same boat for that. I've had times where my legs are tired and I go "Oh, my leg is cramping from moving too much." Then there are the times I catch myself waking up as I'm stretching my leg and pointing my toes in my sleep and go "Oh boy, I'm about to have a whole lot of pain." and then my toes try to curl into the bottom of my foot as the back of my calf tenses really painfully. The latter thing is what I call a Charley Horse. If I catch myself in time and bend my foot and toes up then I can usually stop it before it happens.

I work in Medical and a lot of places don’t use latex due to the allergy being a common allergy. Now some places do have both latex and non-latex products. I know a lot of medical professionals will ask “Do you have an allergy to latex?” or review all your allergies (they should do it anyway but that is up to the clinic themselves) So you know what products to stay clear of and what can be used. That nurse should have verified that the box she had was latex free gloves! You can always file a complaint to the office manager if you need to. Big mistake on the nurses part and I would understand the frustration and furry of it all. I am also allergic to latex so I always look at the product to verify that they aren’t made out of latex and always tell anyone, medical, food etc that I’m allergic to latex, do not use. I hope Mal is doing ok and i’m interested to know if it wasn’t a cyst. What it was.

I did that morning with "Just to remind you, because it's my bad allergy, I'm very allergic to latex. I go into anaphylactic shock" and that's when she was pulling out the gloves and told me they were a latex free office. I suppose they never checked the surgical gloves just the exam ones and assumed. >_< The not-cyst ended up being a benign fibroma.

I wonder if they were prepared for an anaphylactic event which was a real probability in your case. Being in healthcare makes you very aware how scary it can be from a patient’s perspective. The nurses reaction to the near fatal incident was appalling to me. Like aren’t you lucky I saved you. I myself would have made a much bigger stink.

I mean, for what it's worth, I doubt the nurse intentionally lied. Sounds more like she was told, or they generally don't use latex, and some mix-up/miscommunication happened and they had latex gloves...this is why one should always double check, hopefully this will be enough f a reminder to the nurse to remember to do so next time.

I have had similar things happen with latex gloves. My dermatologist, dentist and orthodontist all use latex gloves and have used them on me despite me telling them over and over and it's in my chart. They all nervously chuckle when it happens. I have to say, being in healthcare, a lot of people say that they are allergic to latex. So many say it and you wonder are they really? But I would never ignore what they say.

no offense to people who work in the medical facility, but this is why i personally don't trust doctors a lot of the time, it seems that every time i've had a problem they always said "oh you have this problem" but it turns out it wasn't the problem and i'm like "ok you know what the problem is" they're like No, the fact that Mal's doctor said they were sure only to find out it wasn't and they don't know, kinda bothers me and in previous vlogs Stephen had that same thing too in some of them. Now don't get me wrong i'm sure there are some "A Class" doctors out there no doubt but it seems that these situations come up more often.

    • @MalMakes

To be fair, what it ended up being (a rare type of benign fibroma) was very strange and it exhibited all the symptoms of a cyst. My dermatologist, the ENT, and the other ENT he called in during the procedure - they all thought it was a cyst.

Just saying. Sometimes you cant find the correct answer till youve gone through a few wrong answers that are close to the right answer. Such as in this case all symptoms pointed to a cyst till they opened it up. Since it wasnt what they thought the doctors probably wanted to send it off to a specialist to confirm what it was. Not all doctors will have come across all ailments. Hence why you have specialists.

I am not a Doctor or Nurse so I cant be certain about what I say but it was likely the Doctors Office that was at fault and not the Nurse. The nurse was probabbly told they dont use Latex and was given the box of gloves by someone else. That being said, how could they make that mistake. I would have had a word or two to say and wouldmt have held my touge and I am not one that usually gets mad either.

I get using dark humor as a way to lighten the mood on a dark situation, but in this case it was horribly misused. The nurse's line of "it's a good thing you checked" should have been your line, IF you found it funny (and obviously you didn't). The nurse pulling a move like that makes it seem like she didn't take the situation seriously (and she's a NURSE). Hopefully Mal is feeling better at this point and you guys are having a great holiday.

There was no surface discoloration or any indication that it was even there except a slight lump you could only see when I raised my eyebrows. The doctor said it had all of the signs of a Sebaceous Cyst from the surface but inside not so much. It ended up being a cellular dermatofibroma according to their regular pathologist and the specialist they sent it to confirmed it.
